Multisensory Room

INTRODUCTION
The Multisensory Room is a space to provide people severely affected by intellectual disabilities with activities and sensory experiences in an atmosphere rich in stimulation. These kinds of rooms are designed to stimulate the primary senses such as taste, touch, sight, hearing and smell, without an intellectual activity. The relax and confidence provide a non-directive therapy.

The design and development of these facilities is due to professionals of the Dutch Institutes: Haarendael, Hartenberg y Piussoord. Established 16 years ago as a basic resource to serve therapists and assistants in the world of disability.

This type of multi-sensory room is called "Snoezelen", a contraction of Dutch words that mean "Snuffelen" sniff / impregnate / vacuum, and "Doezelen" which is the peaceful welfare of sleepiness / sleep / calm.

From the start, it has been another way to approach disabled people, acheiving highly positive developments through relaxation and sensory stimulation. Nearly all people that are severely affected by intellectual disabilities are in a corporal experimental phase. This means that their world is to live experiences by moving, touching, smelling, tasting, seeing, hearing.... In this way, they connect and relate to people, objects and environments, giving their interpretation.

The objective is that these people find, in a conditioned space, a wealth of incentives of stimulus that appeal to their senses (sight, smell, touch, hearing, taste, kinesthetic ...) selectively and in a dosed way, where both their ability to interact and relate are enhanced side by side.



 
This stimulation workshop aims to contribute to offer disabled people a longer and better quality of life.

We intend to:
  • Offer people seriously affected by intellectual disability with a variety of experiences that stimulate their senses resulting in pleasant sensations.
  • Provide the ability to communicate with different stimulus, with themselves and with others, through a friendly and peaceful climate conducive to human interaction.
  • Improve the mood of these people bringing about feelings, emotions and relaxing sensations, thus stimulating an emotional balance.
  • Provide enriching, stimulating and enjoyable experiences that enhance the personal experience of their world and thereby enhance their quality of life.
